Preface
This
book is based on research I conducted at the University
of California, Berkeley, and though the conclusions
are my own, the results are a reflection of the work
of three distinguished professors.

Chapter
1: Uncertain Beginnings
Builders
once occupied open land that provided a secure place
from which to sustain their lives. Simple shelters evolved
slowly from crude beginnings into a house-form that
offered protection, purpose, and a place in what must
have been a very uncertain world.

Chapter
2: Marginalized by Modernity
Laws
passed to control growth and protect property values
turned land and housing into a commodity, creating wealth
for some while marginalizing others to a more self-determined
approach to their survival.

Chapter
3: Informal Builders
A
network of informal suppliers, manufacturers, and providers
scale their inventory and services in ways that match
the needs of the hands-on and untutored builders working
in an informal economy.

Chapter
4: Informal Strategies
Blending
the instincts of prehistoric builders with the remains
of the consumptive society that surrounds them, marginalized
builders piece together house-form in a place that they
have already occupied as a home.

Chapter
5: A Homebuilt House
A
homebuilt house is put together instinctively to occupy
a place already taken as a home close to the resources
its builders need to survive.

Chapter
6; Vernacular of Uncertainty
The
impoverished aesthetic of this vernacular is the antithesis
of the fads and fashions found in a consumptive economy.
Outside formal market systems, informal house-form is
shaped strategically, redefining the margins of order
and style, leaving us with the essence of shelter and
survival.

Chapter
7: Resources
Builders
have always been free to occupy open land and build
shelters to protect themselves and their families in
uncertain worlds.
