PUBLICATIONS
Insitebuilders research focuses on ways to document and communicate the assembly of complex objects. The objective is to develop visually collaborative information systems. We test the effectiveness of different ideas using print and electronic media. Both the content and the format of our books are the practical products of this ongoing research. The NEST and related small, simple, and sustainable design-build projects are primarily research tools.

Being SUSTAINABLE
The goal of this book is to illustrate the complexity of how individual building systems fit together and is now available on Amazon. The objective is to help readers visually understand the inherent challenges designers and constructors face in putting together any building as a single, fully integrated, and sustainable collection of building systems. Building SIMPLE
This book uses the same graphic style to illustrate the construction of a mid-rise office building
and is now available on Amazon. This is a great book for those who need or want to see and understand every step of the construction of a complex commercial building. It uses advanced SketchUp models to organize and illustrate the means and methods used to build this building. More information...

3D Construction Modeling
This classic book is in its 9th printing and is again available on Amazon.com (in black & white ). It uses a trial version of SketchUp 4.0 to take readers step by step through the construction of a building information model. The book uses a hands on approach to learning SketchUp and
is a great way to learn 3D modeling and the basics of wood frame construction.

Living SMALL
Uses the graphic narrative style and 3D building information models (BIMs) to explore 16 small, simple, and sustainable houses. Available on Amazon, the book combines comic pages and interactive 3D models to show how these small houses serve their owners as functional shelters and how BIMs can be built and organized in SketchUp. More information.

To meet this objective the book uses a graphic narrative style. The plot of this narrative follows the sequence of system installations, each in support of the other, but all crowded into the same space.

The characters in this narrative are the engineers who size and specify each of these systems and the subcontractors who must coordinate, compromise, and assemble them in the real world. If you have a question or need detailed information please Email Barbara

Did we mention that you can find this book on Amazon,,,;-)

Managing risk, reducing waste, and enhancing jobsite safety are a matter of understanding the "art of construction" as an invisible process embedded in all the buildings that surround us.

Building SIMPLE extends this understanding to everyone interested in making "building simple." It's available for immediate shipping from our website and is now in stock from Amazon (CLICK here). If you have any questions or special interests, please Email Barbara

Though there are differences between SketchUp V4 and later upgrades, except for the appearance of the icons, this book can be adapted to be used with all versions of SketchUp.

At this time, there are no immediate plans to upgrade this book. But it depends on what Google winds up doing with SketchUp....

The 20 BIM models in this book range from simple massing models to piece based construction models.

These models explain the construction of each of the small houses and how they evolved over their life cycles. The models are included to help visualize these small spaces.

The construction modeling also includes tips for design and construction professionals on how they might use BIM models to improve construction communications for their projects.

Small and Simple Books
Illustrated short text and digital publications for the construction industry.

These books are “What’s the Point” graphic narratives designed for working professionals (with no time to read). They are illustrated with panelized screen shots of 3D building information models (BIMs). Each book combines these model images with bubbled comments, simple captions, and quick page references to relay construction information as a stream of sequential activities. This sequence follows the evolution of the building's design and construction.

Our books animate construction on a "published" page. Showing construction information as a series of distinct events. The concept is to panelize and break construction information into chunks of sequential data and deliver it in a page format that can be part of an interactive and tangible, virtual experience. It's this narrative and the interactive experience that tells the story of each construction.

For this reason, each book includes an interactive CD with navigable 3D building information models, short videos, 3D construction models, and links to web resources. The purpose of the BIM models on these CD's is to help readers experience the the way these structures are actually built in the real world. The ability to walk through, deconstruct and control the construction of a building information model gives the reader a sense of scale and a feel for the challenges inherent in real world construction.

BIMs are also known as construction models or piece-based models. They differ from architectural models because they are not design oriented. BIM models are information tools, specifically built to illustrate, animate, and visually communicate information associated with the structures they represent.

These books are our attempt to explore the potential of BIMs, graphic narratives, and interactive learning for construction communications.
